🤩 My reflection

I watched so many TikToks showing how dangerous South Africa is, and I was telling my husband that I would only go there with a group tour company. Then I started to see a few friends going there on their own, and I thought: after travelling to this many countries, I can probably find a way as well if they have done it. And just like that, after the last-minute cancellation of another tour, we ended up buying a flight to South Africa.

I have similar thoughts about South Africa as I do about my own country – such beautiful geography with such a sad political past. It was a mix of reflections that I came back with. First, I think together with Kruger National Park, where we initially visited, I saw more types of animals than I have ever seen in my life. Like when you are a kid and learn the names of animals in books but never see them in real life again, I saw all of them for real. Second, it was such a beautiful landscape. We have a saying in Turkish, “gözlerim bayram etti”, meaning my eyes feasted – I truly experienced that. Third, the variety of food, venues, hip shops – oh my, such a heaven.

In this guide, you’ll find a 6–7 day Cape Town itinerary, including must-see sights, great landscapes, nice restaurants, and practical travel tips. The route is designed for you to see as much as possible in a short stay.

📢 Essential tips

Here’s everything you need to plan your 7 days in Cape Town, including where to stay and how to get around:

Where to stay in Cape Town

I can recommend 4 areas, not ranked by preference: 1- Camps Bay (upscale seaside neighborhood), 2- Sea Point (more residential seaside neighborhood), 3- Gardens (central and vibrant area), 4- V&A Waterfront (very touristy and very safe). We chose to stay in two different areas to get two different vibes of the city: Gardens and Sea Point. And indeed, they were very different from each other. Gardens is very central, close to the city center but away from the less safe parts of town. You still need to be cautious anywhere, but during the day we walked on Kloof Street to visit cafés and ice cream shops, which was very nice. There are also many great restaurants nearby. Sea Point, on the other hand, is a seaside neighborhood with a more laid-back, relaxed vibe.

How to get around in Cape Town:

Uber was super fast, available everywhere and incredibly cheap (in comparison with my city Amsterdam). Other than that, we arranged day tours for the faraway destinations. We have never used public transportation due to safety concerns.

Need for visa

I’m Turkish, live in Amsterdam, and visited South Africa in 2025/2026. I didn’t need a visa to enter the country.

How to pay in Cape Town

Credit card was valid in all restaurants and cafes we've been to. And as we bought the tours online, we paid upfront. But I think it would be good to bring cash to tip people.

What to wear in Cape Town

Even in summer, the evenings were breezy. So I mostly carried a sweatshirt with me. I tried to underdress without anything too flashy or valuable for safety purposes.

Safety in Cape Town

This was my biggest concern for this trip. But honestly, if you use common sense and follow certain rules, it's such a joyful city. Here are a couple of tips we heard and applied: Avoid CBD (city center) at night, don't go out after 9PM/10PM, don't go to quiet streets day or night, travel with Uber.
