🤩 My reflection
I wish we hadn’t underestimated this location and had stayed for the full weekend! It’s the definition of overdosed cuteness in a British village. We visited on a mild November day, and it was so serene and picturesque. I really wanted to spend the whole day without rushing, just enjoying the cafés, bars, and shops. It has an old-time charm that I rarely experience in my busy city life. It’s somewhat touristic, yes, but definitely worth a visit - even if you only have half a day or two.
In this guide, you’ll find all villages you can visit in Cotswolds are and the ones we prioritized to visit.
✍🏻 Itinerary
The Cotswolds is a rural region in England made up of many villages, small towns, and open countryside rather than one single place. Each village has its own character, but they are generally known for stone houses, local shops, pubs, and historic buildings. It is famous for its traditional English villages, countryside scenery, and easy access from London and Oxford, which makes it a popular getaway. Its reputation has also been boosted by celebrity connections, with people like David Beckham, Kate Moss, and Jeremy Clarkson owning homes or spending time there, adding to its appeal as a countryside retreat.
The villages in the area that you can visit (ordered by the most iconic and photographed spots):
Bourton-on-the-Water – known for its low bridges and river running through the center
Bibury – famous for Arlington Row, one of the most photographed streets in England
Castle Combe – often called one of the prettiest villages in England
Stow-on-the-Wold – historic market town with antique shops and a central square
Broadway – popular for its wide main street and independent boutiques
Burford – known as the “gateway to the Cotswolds” with a sloping high street
Lower Slaughter – quiet village with a small river and old mill
Chipping Campden – known for its long high street and traditional limestone buildings
Painswick – known for its churchyard with rows of yew trees
Upper Slaughter – peaceful and less visited, with traditional cottages
Moreton-in-Marsh – a market town with good transport links and a regular market
Snowshill – small village near scenic countryside and walking routes
Bonus: Lacock Abbey & Village – just outside the Cotswolds in Wiltshire, famous for its historic abbey and village streets used in Harry Potter films as parts of Hogwarts and James and Lily Potter’s home.
The villages we visited in Cotswolds
We were essentially doing an Oxford–Bath trip. Since the Cotswolds was so close, I wanted to visit quickly and see what all the hype was about.
Cotswolds half-day tour, including:
Burford
Bibury
Stow-on-the-Wold
If I had more time, I would definitely stay for a weekend to fully experience the countryside, explore the region by car, move from village to village, and stop at any picturesque spots I found along the way. Hopefully, that will be for the next trip.
